Obituary – Concept, Characteristics, and Examples

We explain what an obituary is, its characteristics, and its differences with an obituary. We also explain what a digital obituary is and various examples. Please read other MTV articles for more information. If you share it, it will be of little help to us.

What is an obituary?

A certain type of text or note that is distributed to the public and announces the death of a specific person is called an obituary, death notice, or death notice. They can be distributed through the media or in places with mass transit. They should not be confused with obituaries, which are texts written to honor the deceased’s life, rather than to inform third parties of their death.

Obituaries are usually written by the family or friends of the deceased, or by institutions or groups to which they belonged during their lifetime. They are usually printed in such a way that the text is enclosed in a black or gray box, often accompanied by crosses or other solemn religious icons.

Characteristics of Obituaries

Broadly speaking, obituaries are characterized by the following:

  • They are brief funeral texts, written by those close to the deceased, whose purpose is to publicly announce their death.
  • Their content is often accompanied by religious icons (depending on the deceased’s religion) and phrases from religious liturgy, such as the popular RIP (Riescat in pace, “Rest in peace” in Latin), or similar euphemisms.
  • The full name of the deceased is prominently displayed in bold or highlighted in some way, and below it, their titles, aliases, academic degrees, or simply phrases by which the deceased was known. Finally, below, the age at death, the place and date of death.
  • They may also include the names of those who bid farewell, whether close friends, family members, or business associates, and the invitation to the funeral services (wake, burial, or both).

Digital Obituary

The widespread use of the Internet and the 2.0 world has allowed for the emergence of digital obituaries, that is, obituary publications on specialized web portals, online newspapers, and other digital public spaces, such as social media or email distribution lists. Thus, the dissemination of this type of text is faster and more widespread than ever before, and it is now part of the commercial services available online.
